WIP Wednesday

I actually remembered it’s Wednesday… success! :P

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced
Here’s what I got accomplished this week:

Completed Projects:

This was a very busy week of applique tees!   I’m trying to get the shop back up and running and the rest are headed out the door to their new homes today.

I especially love the last 3.  A trio of camping themed tees for siblings that are going on a special camping trip next weekend.

New Projects:
I’m working on two new projects, but nothing to show yet.

  • November is my month for Sew Bee It.  I’m finishing up my sample blocks and getting fabric in the mail.
  • November also starts the first month of the Dream circle that I’m hosting for Do. Good Stitches!  I’m very excited about this project and just love the charity that we will be working with, Project Night Night!  I’m finishing up the design for this quilt so we can get started.

Ongoing Projects:

Threadheads Bee :: October block for Chris of Light Blue Quilt Co.

In Progress:

  • Sew Bee It :: October block.
  • a 241 tote
  • a Go Anywhere Bag
  • 8 other tshirts

Tops Awaiting Quilting:

The poor Pinwheel Quilt is still lonely and waiting to be quilted.   I’m hoping to get it finished once Holiday sewing is done.

No Progress:

  • Gavin’s Quilt
  • Spider blocks

Saturday Sewing

I finished up the blocks for the Threadheads Bee today.

Chris requested these scrappy blocks from Aneela’s tutorial.   She sent each of us a scrap pack for one and then asked us to make a second from our own fabrics.

I was glad I got PINK because I have lots of that in my stash!   I decided to mix both the ones she sent and my own together and did a light pink and a darker pink.   Love how they turned out, especially the darker pink.    Mostly because I love that cameo of Parisville!

These blocks will be made into a quilt for her little girl Emily, so I pieced in a little ‘E’.

What are you working on this weekend?

Pinwheel Potholder :: Tutorial + Giveaway

Hi there!  Today I’m going to give you the basics to make an 8×8 quilted potholder that has a modernized pinwheel design.

Each pinwheel block  is foundation pieced and then all 12 are sewn together.   If you’ve never foundation pieced, don’t be intimidated!  This is a great tutorial on how to do it and the pinwheel is really simple and would be a great first-time project using this method.

I’m providing the template for the pinwheels and basic instructions for piecing the layout and putting the potholder together.   This project uses small amounts of fabric, so it’s difficult to give exact yardage.

You have two options for making the pinwheels.   When you print the template there are (5) – 2.5″ squares per page.  The patchwork portion of the potholder uses (12) – 2.5″ squares.

If you would prefer to paper piece, print out 3 template pages and use 12 of the squares.   The other option is to cut (12) 2.5″ squares from your solid fabric and foundation piece without paper.   This is the method I chose because it saves the mess of tearing away the paper.

If you want to go this route, use 1 of the template squares and cut away the side triangles leaving the center ‘kite’.

You will use that as a guide to trace your sewing lines onto the solid squares.   This makes sense to me as I type, but please let me know if it sounds confusing to you!

You will need:

  • PinwheelPotholderTemplate
  • 8×8 + 8×6 pieces of Insulbrite  (you could also use regular batting, but it will not be as heat-resistant)
  • 10 prints measuring 6×6 each (if you are utilizing scraps you just need enough to cover 4  triangles per print, so you can easily use 4 different sized scraps)
  • 1 solid measuring about 14×14
  • double fold binding
  • 8×8 piece for the inside of the potholder
  • 8×8 piece for the backside of the potholder
  • 8×6 piece for the backside of the patchwork piece

Once you’ve decided how you want to piece (paper piecing vs. foundation piecing directly on the fabric) prepare your squares by cutting 12 of the paper templates or 12 fabric squares with your ‘kite’ drawn in the center of each.

Below I’ve shown you the layout of all 12 blocks.  Figure out where you want each print to go and then assign each a number.   Write the number in the spot that will use that fabric.  Now you can piece your blocks more quickly!

Once you have all 12 squares complete, arrange in the layout above.   Now we need to piece them together.  Start in the top left corner and piece the top row together with a 1/4″ seam.   You can press seams open or to the side, whichever you prefer.

Then you will piece all 3 rows together and will end up with this beauty.

Next we need to make a quilt sandwich with the patchwork piece.   (*Note, I will be using a different patchwork piece for my pictures using the same measurements.)

Grab your 8×6 piece of insulbrite and your 8×6 lining piece.   Layer lining piece wrong side up, then insulbrite, and your patchwork piece last, right side up.    Pin or spray baste and then quilt as desired.

Now, take a piece of your binding and bind the top edge of the patchwork piece.

Repeat the quilt sandwich for the back portion of the potholder.  Start with your 8×8 backing piece wrong side up, then insulbrite and last your 8×8 inside piece, right side up.  Quilt as desired.

Time to  put it all together!

With the lining right side up, place your patchwork piece on top and line up the bottom edges.

Baste by sewing around the sides and bottom outside edges, very close to the edge.   Just enough to hold the two together.

Finish by binding the completed square.

Make a few more and you have a great hostess gift or just something pretty to use in your own kitchen!  You can substitute any patchwork piece using the same measurements.

If you made it this far, thank you!  I thought I’d have a little giveaway just for fun.

I will draw 3 winners:

My vintage quilting treasure, quilt contest entry

I mentioned yesterday that my family from Texas had brought along a little treasure for me.   A 9+ foot treasure!

It’s part of an old quilting frame that belonged to my Great Grandmother.    My aunt has been keeping the two remaining boards.

My Great Grandmother was a quilter as is my Aunt.  When she found out that I had started quilting, she thought I might like to have a part of the quilting history in my family.    This board is 138 years old!

I don’t know what the heck I will do with it, but I truly cherish it.

There are holes at each end where the boards were tied so they could be lifted to the ceiling when not in use.  On the other side are tons of nail holes and even some nails still in the board.   I can’t figure out if maybe they nailed the batting to keep it taut?

Here’s a shot of what it would have looked with all four boards.

Any ideas on what to do with it?

Also,  my scrappy Mod Circles quilt is in the weekly quilting contest over at QuiltingGallery.com.    I’d love your vote, if you’d be so inclined!  It’s about the 15th or 16th one down.

Vote in the Scrappy Quilt Contest

Thanks!

Randomness.

First off, Hello, if you’re visiting from Modern Day Quilts! *waves*

Thank you so much to Heather for featuring my Mod Circles Quilt today!

It’s been kind of quiet in LRstitchland.   We had family visiting from TX so I’ve gotten behind on my sewing.   They brought  me an old quilt-related treasure that  I am so excited about.   I need to snap a pic and will share tomorrow.

I am also writing up a little tutorial for my pinwheel potholder and should have it posted before Monday.

That’s about it, hope you are having a great week!

WIP Wednesday

Let’s see what I managed to accomplish this week:

New Projects:

No new projects this week.   I’m determined to bust out my current to-do list before adding anything in.

Ongoing Projects:
Simply Strings Bee:   October is the last month and it’s MY month too!   I chose a spider web block for this month in teals, blues, greens and grays.

I’m excited to see these blocks roll in and start piecing.   I’ve been wanting to complete a string quilt for awhile now, so I’m thankful these ladies are going to help me cross #33 off my Life’s to-do list.  Woot!    I made a little mockup just for fun.

Then we have the September block for the {Sew Bee It.} group.   Jenna chose a churn dash style block that will be made into a quilt for her daughter.    One of my flying geese was a bit naughty and didn’t line up perfect.    tsk tsk!

That’s it for this week.   Now that everyone is starting to feel better around here, I hope to be more productive next Wed!

Chalkboard Pumpkin Tutorial

Wait, wha?

Oh yes, chalkboard.pumpkin.

Endless face changes, no gooey mess.

Lots of fun and easy peasy!

I also got my fall window box planted with some colorful mums.   I can’t wait for these to grow and fill in some.

As soon as Oct 1 hits, I am ready to change up the colors in this house.   Love, love fall!
