Practicing precision (and patience!)

I don’t know about you, but I find a lot of times in my sewing/quilting that I’m quite impatient!

I decided to work on some precision sewing by trying my hand at triangles.

There are 144 triangles in this mini, and they have for sure tested my patience!

I’ve had to be careful in my cutting, making sure to pay attention to the grain of the fabric and definitely careful in piecing.

I started by only being able to stand piecing four or five triangles at a sitting which is kind of laughable!  I just get so frustrated at having to focus.

Improv, I understand now why I love you so much.    Purely carefree sewing!

I know if I keep practicing this precision thing will get easier.

How about you?  Are you a pro at precision or do you struggle too?  Any tips?

My littles are on winter break, so I’m off to enjoy the time with them at home!

Modern Mini Challenge

Hi!

Welcome to Day 11 of the Modern Mini Challenge blog hop!

I am really excited about this challenge and look forward to seeing how you push yourself to try something new.   Hopefully I can provide a little inspiration for you today.

Spiderweb Mini :: 20″ x 20″ square

When Jennifer asked me to join in, I immediately started thinking of what I could do to challenge myself.

I love that mini quilts give you a smaller scale to try a new technique, but also leave you with an amazing little work of art.

I started by brainstorming ways a quilter could challenge themselves:

  • Paper piecing
  • A traditional block design if you’re always doing modern and vice versa
  • Applique
  • A new and bolder color combination
  • Stepping away from set fabric collections and pulling favorite pieces to create your own collection
  • Using only solids
  • Improv piecing
  • Curves
  • A new way to quilt whether that be handquilting, freemotion, or straight lines
  • Creating your own original design
  • Precision piecing

There really are endless possibilities!    For me, I already had a mini in progress and I was trying to decide how to finish it.

I knew the perfect challenge would be to try a new quilting technique.

I have the hardest time with straight line quilting.   Probably because I’m impatient!

I’m not going to get better if I don’t practice, so the spider webs were straight line quilted.

I also have a tendency to just meander all of my quilts because I’m comfortable with that… hello, challenge calling.  I love pebble quilting, so why not give that a go?

The white areas were pebble quilted and while neither are perfect, I am proud of myself for trying something new and every time I look at this quilt I’m reminded that it feels really good to push myself.

That’s my newest mini, but I thought I’d also share the others that I’ve made in the past.

(P.S. Did you catch my off white star point!?  Aw, the fun of quilting.   Realizing after your done that you had a scrap of Kona Snow mixed in with your White!   LOL)

This is a little mini of my sewing machine, Pearl.   This quilt is completely appliqued.

This is the tiniest quilt I’ve ever made, postcard size.    I paper pieced the background and then appliqued the flower on top.

Potholders are minis too!

A bit of a picture overload, but hopefully you can find some inspiration amongst it all.

Please don’t miss out on this fun challenge!

I feel like so many of us wait until we are ‘good’ at  a technique before putting it into something we love.    Don’t do that, I think you should use something you love to try your new techniques!    Who is inspired by their ‘mess up’ fabric?   Not me.

Get out the colors that make you happy and the fabric that really gets your creativity going.  That’s what you need to use!    I find you do even better at a new technique when you’re continually inspired in the process.

xo, Lindsey

P.S.   The inspiration is still flowing, be sure to visit the rest of the bloggers on the hop!

Happy <3 Day, giveaway winners announced

Happy Valentine’s Day,  I hope your morning is off to a good start!

Mine started off with pink heart shaped pancakes and heart bacon (found on Pinterest).   I love celebrating holidays with little ones, they get excited over the smallest things.

I love this art print I found on Etsy too, my Grandmother used to say this to me.   Sweet memories.

One thing I collect is buttons! I fill mason jars with buttons all of one color, and right now they fill a shelf. Help! I need to know what to do with these buttons, although I must say they are very pretty in the jars! (Thanks for the explanation of Zakka – I followed your link!)

Dream Circle :: Boys quilt finished!

My first quilt finish of 2012!

This is the boys quilt for the Dream Circle of do. Good Stitches.

November was my month to design, piece and quilt.    You can read a little more about my troubles with these quilts here.

I was able to get this boys quilt to work like I envisioned, woohoo!    I do still love the way the girls quilt is coming though.   It’s in the process of being finished now.

I had to piece and fill in with smaller squares, and this one is my favorite.  I LOVE these glasses!

I’m looking forward to getting the girls quilt finished and then delivering them to the Project Night Night participating shelter here in Atlanta.

My month is coming up again in April, so I have got to start brainstorming.  It will be here before I know it!

Back to School

First off, I should have shared a picture of the back cover to Zakka Style.   There are more lovely pictures of what’s inside!

I personally can.not.wait. to make the leaf bag at the top.   Love it!

Several of you are new to Zakka too, so I thought I’d share what I know about it.

Zakka means “many things” in Japanese and refers to the everyday things in your home.   Towels, bags, slippers, baskets, potholders, etc.

The concept is taking the everyday functional items and making them special.   Most of what I’m familiar with takes linen (or a neutral fabric) and kicks it up a notch, though never overly done.      Keeping it simple with just a pop of color, an applique or some handstitching.

Duff had a brilliant idea to do a sew-along using this book.   I am definitely going to sew through it myself and maybe you want to join me?    Most of the projects are simple enough that we could tackle one a week, but could always give extra time for those that require a bit more work.      I figure we could meet back each week and link up our projects so that we can share and encourage each other!

The only catch is that you would need your own book.   I wouldn’t be sharing instructions.  What do you think, would anyone be interested?

No worries if you’re not!   I know I’m more motivated when I have others to share the journey and maybe you are too!  I will also need to check with Rashida to make sure it would be okay with her.   I just wanted to gauge interest.

So, on the school note,  Rachel’s Curves Class started on Monday.

The 1st project this week was a scalloped bunting.   It adds a little fun to my sewing room!    I am most looking forward to improv curves.     I’m excited about adding that technique to my quilting!

I also started an Upholstery Class with my friend Nicole last week.   Today was my second class and my arms are so sore!   Stripping the chairs down is a heck of a lotta work!   I have never seen so many staples in my life.

I should have taken a before picture (imagine 1970s harvest gold velvet damask fabric!), but here is my chair in her naked glory.   There are 2 of them.

My teacher was not very happy when I informed her that I would be painting the chairs aqua.   I am planning to piece a quilt top to reupholster the chairs with and I want them to be funky and fun.    I have a feeling she will be giving me a hard time about ruining the wood each class!

I actually need to go work on sanding, so I will see you here tomorrow for Day 4 of the birthday celebration!
