Coming Along…

I finished my other two pepper potholders  and it’s kind of ridiculous how happy they make me!

I traced out my pieces for the B, L, D towels last night and have started fusing and cutting the appliques today.  I’m excited about these too!

Hope your projects this week are coming along well and making you smile!

Bell Pepper Hotpad

The project this week was such an instant gratification.   I loved how quickly and cleverly these were put together!

I have 2 more cut out and ready to sew and I know I’ll be making these again.   I think they’d make an adorable housewarming gift.

The link up is back open until midnight tonight EST.  I’m so sorry for the problems earlier.   The inlinkz clock is 24 hour time and I mistankenly chose 11:59 instead of 24:59!

Thanks for being patient with me!

See ya tomorrow for the winner from this week and our new project intro.

Sewing Summit, Pellon Projects, Etsy, oh my!

I have several things to share and felt a bit silly doing a separate post for each.

So this is a random mash up post to get it all out there!    If you ever meet me in person, this is not unlike my personality.   Once I start talking I tend to word vomit on a zillion topics.

I don’t get out much, lol.

(1)  Sewing Summit!

I’m super excited to share that I’ll be teaching this year.

SS13imaspeaker SS13imteaching

My class will be on Sewing with Leather and will be a 2-part lecture + hands on class.

The lecture will go over  sourcing, sewing, and caring for leather/suede in your sewing projects along with inspiration, tips and tricks.

In the hands on class we will take what we learned in the lecture and put it to use in making a tote bag with suede accents.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow, April 16th at 10am MST!

It’s going to be lots of fun, I hope to see you there!

(2)  Pellon Projects

I signed on last year to be a Pellon Projects Designer and I turned in my first tutorial a couple weeks ago.

It’s for a roll up cosmetics case.   I made these for swap gifts at Sew South and just loved how the pattern turned out.  I can’t wait to share it with you.

I’m still waiting to hear when the tutorial will go live, but I will be sure to keep you updated.     The Pellon website was just given a fresh new look, so pop over and peek if you haven’t been by in awhile.   It looks great!

(3)  I finally updated my Etsy shop, and have large and small clutches and key fobs available.    Use coupon LR15OFF for 15% off, cause I love ya!

etsupdate

(4)  I’m thankful to welcome a new sponsor, Lima Sews!

Linh has a gorgeous Etsy shop full of modern fabrics and also offers long arm quilting too.

What else…

I’m way behind on sharing about Sew South.    I got home, then it was Easter, last week was Spring Break and this week I’m planning a baby shower for my sister’s first babe.   Feeling a little cuckoo lately.     I also finally got with the times and joined Instagram.  You can follow me @lrstitched if you’d like to see my bits of randomness.

I think that’s it.   Hope you’re having a great start to the week and that you and your loved ones are safe.   I just read about what happened in Boston and am so sad.    I just cannot understand the why behind this.     Trying to remember that there is more love than hate in this world and focus on that.    Thoughts and prayers are with these families.

Zakka 2.0 :: Patchwork, Please

So excited to finally share about this ‘officially’!  I know many of you have been involved in the buzz on flickr.

I am thrilled that we are doing another round of the Zakka Along.    Last year was a success as we stitched through the book Zakka Style and many of you wanted to do it again.

We’re doing it again, yay!

This year we will be stitching through Ayumi Takahashi’s new release, Patchwork Please.

This book is ADORABLE.    If you follow along with Ayumi’s blog Pink Penguin, then you know what a unique and whimsical sense of style she has.

Her book directly reflects that in every way.   The projects are delightful and her fabric choices are inspiring.

We are going to have a blast and I’m grateful to have Debbie from A Quilter’s Table as my partner in crime this year!

Ayumi helped to pull together 19 of her blogging friends to host the stops on the sew along.

Our contributors this year are:

We are set to start on Monday June 3rd and the sew along will continue for 19 weeks through each project in the book.

The book wasn’t set to release until April 9th, but it was released early and is shipping now.

Book Details:

Published by Interweave/F+W Media, Inc, the list price is $22.95

We’re still ironing out a few details, so I will share more info as we get closer to the sew along.

Things will run very much like last year.    One of the weekly contributors will share their take on a project each Monday along with any tips or tricks they have to help you.

We will then work to sew up our project that week and will link up anytime between Monday and the following Sunday.    A winner will be announced the following  Monday along with the new weeks project.

I am floored at the response I have had from sponsors.  The list is growing each day for the prizes to be given away each week.

Here are some of the lovely businesses that have joined on, in no particular order.

If you haven’t joined in the flickr group, be sure to go and do that.  It’s a great place to ask questions and to meet new people!

You can also grab a button below to share the news of the sew along.

Over the next month I’ll share sourcing ideas for buying your supplies and more details on the sew along dates.

I also have a copy of Patchwork Please to giveaway!

Giveaway is closed, thank you to all who entered!  Winner announced here.

The book will ship directly from Interweave and is only open to US readers.  I’m sorry International readers :(

Just leave a comment below and I’ll choose a winner on Friday, April 5th.

Orbit QAL Week 2 :: Piecing

I’ve enjoyed seeing peeks at the fabrics some of you have picked out!

Today starts Week 2 in the quilt along and we’ll be piecing our quilt together over the next 2 weeks.

The four blocks in the quilt are very straight forward in construction and should give you no trouble at all.

If you’re new to half square triangles, I wanted to share a little picture step-by-step on putting those blocks together.

Click on each collage to see the image up close.

hstcut

hstpiecepress

hsttrim

DSC_1891

The triangles are sized just enough to allow you to square up a small bit.   I really don’t like a lot of waste so you will notice there is not much to trim away.

You can always enlarge your original square size to 6.25″ or 6.50″ to give you a bit more wiggle room.

If you’re familiar with hst blocks you won’t necessarily have to pin.   Pinning is helpful though to make sure your pieces don’t shift and eat up your small trimming allowance.

I recommend making all of your hst blocks first because they are the most tedious (the trimming).   It’s nice to have them out of the way!   You can cut and pin (or stack together) each individual unit and then chain piece.

Week 2 and 3 are for piecing together your quilt.  This includes the individual blocks, rows and on to sewing all the rows together to make your top.

Use the quilt layout guide at the back of the pattern to help you as you go.   I keep it open on my computer as I sew.

Use the flickr group to ask questions, or do so in the comments!  Any questions you have, I’m happy to help!

I will be sharing my progress over the next 2 weeks and I’d love to see yours too.

Orbit QAL :: Pattern Release

I’m excited to kick things off today and get started on our Orbit quilts!

rjrbanner

The pattern is ready and can be downloaded below.

OrbitPattern

Each week we will work through a section, starting today with Cutting and Organizing.

I’ve illustrated cutting for all pieces to give you an idea of how to arrange your cuts.

I’m a visual person, so I find it helpful to see what I’m doing along with the instructions.

You don’t have to cut exactly like this, it’s just a guide to get you started.

fabric4

Remember when cutting to:

• Square up your fabric and measure your fat quarters to make sure they are the correct size.  Nothing worse then starting to cut only to realize your fat quarter was not the right size to begin with!

• Start with a fresh rotary blade, it really does make a difference

• Cut accurately.   A mis-cut can make piecing very difficult!   Measure twice, cut once.

—————

Now let’s talk organizing!

A key part of putting this quilt together easily is to be organized.

While you don’t have to color in a mockup, you will need to use the Quilt by Number sheet to assign a number to each of your fabrics.

The cutting and fabric placement is all done by number.

I like to put my pieces in a Ziploc freezer bag, grouping each number in a separate bag.   When you need to stop for the day, you can zip up your bags and not worry about losing any pieces.

Or if you’ve just put them into piles, you can stick a post-it note on top and call it a day.  It doesn’t have to be fancy.

Other ideas I’ve seen:

• Use an expandable file folder to keep cut pieces organized

expandable file folder

Use paper plates to stack pieces together

Organize your rows with saved bread ties

Use Q-pins, numbered quilting pins to help you stay organized

Using dollar store baking sheets

Share any tips you have in the comments and if you have any questions while cutting, please let me know.

I’ll share my cutting progress this week in the flickr group.   Share yours too!

Noodlehead Divided Basket Pattern

This is my cute basket made from Anna’s new Divided Basket pattern.

Have I told you how clever she is?

Before I saw the pattern, the divided part of the basket had me stumped.  I could not think through how to sew one in and it look so neat and tidy.

Easy.  SO dang easy.    You will make this and have an aha moment.

I like those.

I love to organize and now after making this, I have tons of ideas of what I could use more for.

I’m in the middle of a sewing room overhaul, so I want to make some to hold scraps for my shelves.

I get ridiculous pleasure from making something that you normally would just buy at Target.

The ideas are really endless:

  • hold napkins and silverware for a party
  • toy storage
  • changing table organizer
  • scrap bin for the sewing room
  • kleenex/extra toilet paper holder in the bathroom
  • fruit storage for your kitchen counter
  • pantry organization
  • on and on and on!

The finished bag measures   13.5″wide, 7.5″ deep, 10.5″ tall including handles (7.5″ tall without).  Roomy but easy to tote around.

It has 2 sturdy handles on the side and an optional front pocket.

A unique and useful pattern that I know I’ll make over and over.

I know you’ll like it too!
