Dream Circle :: Boys quilt finished!

My first quilt finish of 2012!

This is the boys quilt for the Dream Circle of do. Good Stitches.

November was my month to design, piece and quilt.    You can read a little more about my troubles with these quilts here.

I was able to get this boys quilt to work like I envisioned, woohoo!    I do still love the way the girls quilt is coming though.   It’s in the process of being finished now.

I had to piece and fill in with smaller squares, and this one is my favorite.  I LOVE these glasses!

I’m looking forward to getting the girls quilt finished and then delivering them to the Project Night Night participating shelter here in Atlanta.

My month is coming up again in April, so I have got to start brainstorming.  It will be here before I know it!

Quilt in progress

The Dream Circle of do. good stitches started up in November.   I’m hosting, so the first month I was in charge of designing and quilting our 2 quilts.

My idea was to do a quilt like this:

Source: flickr.com via Val on Pinterest

Each of the ladies made gorgeous blocks!

I messed up though.

I should have assigned a few people to make single squares, blocks with 2, blocks with 3 etc.     Instead I just said, do what you want!

So, I got lots of single squares and not very many multiples and the sizes are too large for a baby quilt to get the look I was going for.    Lesson learned, in a bee like this, specifics are important!

I needed to come up with a new plan since I have blocks for a boy quilt and a girl quilt.    I brainstormed for awhile,  folded the fabrics and arranged them different ways and this is what I came up with.

Crossing my fingers the ladies are okay with the fact that I reconfigured their blocks.  eek!

We are making quilts to benefit Project Night Night.  They are a wonderful organization who provide little bags with a quilt, book and stuffed toy for homeless children.

I hope that the quilts can be a source of security and comfort for these kids.  Something that can stay with them no matter where they are.   I know how much my kids love the blankies they sleep with at night.

I had a few small pieces left over and decided I wanted to piece the word ‘dream’ into the quilt somewhere.

I’m excited to finish this and the boys quilt and get them delivered!

Saturday Sewing

I finished up the blocks for the Threadheads Bee today.

Chris requested these scrappy blocks from Aneela’s tutorial.   She sent each of us a scrap pack for one and then asked us to make a second from our own fabrics.

I was glad I got PINK because I have lots of that in my stash!   I decided to mix both the ones she sent and my own together and did a light pink and a darker pink.   Love how they turned out, especially the darker pink.    Mostly because I love that cameo of Parisville!

These blocks will be made into a quilt for her little girl Emily, so I pieced in a little ‘E’.

What are you working on this weekend?

WIP Wednesday

Let’s see what I managed to accomplish this week:

New Projects:

No new projects this week.   I’m determined to bust out my current to-do list before adding anything in.

Ongoing Projects:
Simply Strings Bee:   October is the last month and it’s MY month too!   I chose a spider web block for this month in teals, blues, greens and grays.

I’m excited to see these blocks roll in and start piecing.   I’ve been wanting to complete a string quilt for awhile now, so I’m thankful these ladies are going to help me cross #33 off my Life’s to-do list.  Woot!    I made a little mockup just for fun.

Then we have the September block for the {Sew Bee It.} group.   Jenna chose a churn dash style block that will be made into a quilt for her daughter.    One of my flying geese was a bit naughty and didn’t line up perfect.    tsk tsk!

That’s it for this week.   Now that everyone is starting to feel better around here, I hope to be more productive next Wed!

Linking up to WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced.   Go visit and say congrats to Lee on her first Moda Bake Shop recipe!

And she’s off!

My baby girl had her first day of preschool yesterday.  I have never seen a child more excited to grow up!

On the way to drop her off she said ‘You’re gonna drop me off right? And not stay?  I can stay by myself, cause I’m a big girl?’.

Yes, baby.  You’re a big girl now!

I’m slowly getting into a groove and realizing just how much can be accomplished with a quiet house.

I finished up a few more bee blocks today.   July is done and it feels much better to be caught up.

Mary requested a block pattern from the book  Block Party:

and Sabah requested a Log Cabin block:

I also got a surprise in my mailbox.  A  misplaced package I’ve been waiting on from Moda arrived.    The circle quilt tutorial will finally be on it’s way, hooray!  I know it’s been a long wait.

Hope your week is off to a great start,

Lindsey

ATLMQG Retreat

I am so tired (or I should say sew tired), what a weekend!

Saturday was the Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild’s 1st annual Retreat which happened to also be my 29th birthday.

My hubby had to work, but I am so thankful my Mom was willing to watch my little monsters so I could go.  Best birthday gift ever.  12 hours of sewing, friends, food and laughter.

Our social coordinators Chris and Pam organized a great  event.  (THANK YOU ladies!)

We met at Chris’ neighborhood clubhouse.  It was large and sunny (and freezing). When I walked in I thought, this has got to be a dream.   We had snacks, tunes to work to, and the place was stuffed full of 21 quilters STUFF.   And might I add that most of us brought way more than could ever be sewn in 12 hours.    You know, dream big, and all that.

I am behind on my Bee blocks for July, so I took those 3 along with my 3 for August.   That was the priority project and because I would breeze through those in no time flat, I also took my beach quilt so that I could make the backing, baste and FMQ it.   HA! hahahahaha!

This is what I looked like most of the time. (I’m in the striped tee.)

I spent more time contemplating sewing (and running my mouth!) than actually sewing.   It’s surprisingly difficult to get a lot done when there are so many fun people to yack with and ooh and awe over their projects and fabric.     It also helps to make sure you have all pieces and directions when you won’t have access to the internet.  oops.

I still managed to get 3 blocks completed and had a LOT of fun too.  We played a fun dice game that Pam learned about when she visited the Nashville Modern Quilt Guild.   You have to bring 3 fat quarters as your entry fee.   On the first round everyone has 3 FQ’s so they get to roll 3 die.   The die had dots, stars and the words left and right on them.    If you got a dot you got to keep one of your FQ, if you had a star you had to throw one in the pile in the middle, if you had left/right you had to pass the other to the person sitting next to you in that direction.

You keep going around rolling (if you only have 2 FQ in your hand, you roll 2 die on your turn, 1 FQ, 1 die,  0 FQ, no roll) until only 1 person is left with any fabric in their hands. They win!

It was hilarious and the game changed so quickly from you being out to your neighbor rolling a direction and you being right back in again.    We played twice once in the morning and once in the afternoon and the winners, Chris and Amy walked away with 42 fat quarters each.   I love any game that ends in you winning fabric!

Here’s the blocks I finished at retreat:

Modern Cross block for Jennifer

Liberated Cross Block for Sarah

I cannot wait until the next retreat so I can hang out with these peeps again!  Seriously an awesome group of people that have become friends I can’t wait to see each month.

June Bee Blocks, a new quilt forming and lazy summer days

Goodness, time has passed since my last post!

I am for sure caught up in the laziness of summer.   It’s definitely a nice time to enjoy a slower pace.

Regardless of my lack of writing, there is still sewing going on.  Relaxation for me can’t happen without some stitching!

Here’s a recap of the bee blocks I’ve made for June:

Threadheads Bee. – Chelsea asked us for a Starburst Block using the tutorial from Film in the Fridge.

{Modern 12} Bee – Crystal asked for a Snail Trail block

and for the Simply Strings Bee. – Kelly asked for us to take the gray block she sent and create string pieced circles to applique on top.  We could do one or more and place them at random.   Can’t wait to see how these all look together!

I was on a block roll, so I decided to try my hand at a block I’ve been wanting to do for awhile.    This is pattern from a book I have that is filled with older traditonal blocks.   It’s called the Wheel of Fortune or the Road to Fortune.    I LOVE this so much and can’t wait to have a finished quilt.

Have you been stitching anything fun these past few weeks?

Lindsey

P.S.  I’m still waiting on Moda so that I can get my tutorial posted for you guys.  I will have it up as soon as I can, I apologize for the delay!

Dresden Quilt finished!

Hooray!

I can hardly believe it, but I managed to have the quilt mostly done for show-n-tell.  The binding wasn’t stitched to the back until today, but my guild friends didn’t mind.

It’s so fun to be able to share a project with people who love quilting as much as you.

I ended up ditching the sashing altogether and just added a 3 inch border of white on each side.    Once I got to sewing, that just felt like the right thing to do.    The quilt ended up a little larger than a standard twin at 70 x 86.

Twin Dresden Quilt

I discovered it’s much harder to photograph a bed-sized quilt with only one person holding.   And equally hard for the person trying to hold the quilt!  (Thank you honey for breaking your back while I proceeded to take umpteen million of the same picture)

Twin Dresden Quilt - back

I love how the back turned out.   This was my first time randomly piecing things together and I can’t wait to make another quilt this way.  It was freeing to just go with the flow.

It was a bit of a wake up call though when I realized, hey, you have to piece all that together.   I got so caught up in just putting pieces on my design wall, that I forgot about the sewing part!

The little white box towards the bottom is the label.    I hate not knowing the details of some of the quilts handed down to me, so I’m  trying to be better about recording the history.  Here’s what it says:

I am so thrilled to have this quilt complete.  The cherry on top was my little girl’s reaction when I put it on her bed.  She screeched and gave me the biggest bear hug while she told me that she loved it and how she couldn’t wait to sleep with it.

Reactions like that make every stitch absolutely priceless!

Thank you for sharing in the process with me!

Lindsey

This is it, I swear.

I had a couple final thoughts on the sashing and of course if I made the mockup, I had to share.

Pinky promise there are no more.  Even I’m sick of looking at these…

When I first set out to make this quilt I didn’t even consider sashing.   Sashing didn’t exist in my vocab.    Now I’m obsessing…

How fast we fall.

I’m finding myself really torn between the previous thin all-over sashing and this middle one, plain with a scrappy border.

I guess we’ll see what happens!   I need to finish up the rest of the blocks before I can do anything.   So, next time you see this quilt it will be D.O.N.E.    Can’t wait!
