Hello Week 8!
(Click on the picture to see who made each mug rug).
Lots of cute mug rugs last week and 34 entries!
The winner of the last $30 gift certificate to Zip It is ::
#5 Sheila, bluepatchquilter
Congratulations Sheila, I loved the sunshine you added to your mug rug!
Thank you Zip It for your generosity in sponsoring three of our project weeks!

This week we tackle the biggest project in the book, the Zakka Block Quilt.
I’m excited to have Michelle from I like Orange sharing her inspiration for us!
She has a great eye for color and I know you’ll love her quilt.
(Peek at her Etsy shop too, she designs gorgeous bag and quilt patterns.)

We have a great giveaway prize for those of you who are ready to tackle this one week challenge.
Even if you’ve never made a quilt before, this is a simple patchwork design that would be great for a first time quilting project. I will give fair warning, quilting is addicting, so this may not be your last quilt!
I’ve put together some resources for a newbie quilter:
- Amy from Diary of a Quilter has a great Quilting 101 series that is very helpful!
- Making a quilt sandwich at Oh Fransson
- Tutorial for spray basting a quilt at Film in the Fridge
- Pin basting with Jeni at In Color Order
- Binding help at Jaybird Quilts
If you find yourself stuck, please let us know in the flickr group or send me an email.
I want you to be successful! You can do it!

Projects that are completed and entered this week will be eligible to win a $75 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop.
Shopping for fabric without having to spend a dime is a heck of a motivator, right?!
You may begin linking up your finished Block Quilt today through Sunday May 27th at 11:59 pm EST for a chance to win the $75 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop!
Click on the frog picture below to link up (one) of your projects or to view the entries.
Have fun!
xo, Lindsey
It’s so much fun, how one small project inspires in so many different ways!
Congratulations to Sheila xxxx
I am 12 hr behind on ALL my projects, to many family obligations, but not this week, I have been preparing… this is fun
Very fun – great prize so congrats to the winner!
wow, what a price. I might try smaller one.
Lindsey – it appears to me although the Zakka Sew Along header on your home page does not have weeks 5 through 8 attached to it. I have found this a useful place to go back and look at the different weeks projects including all the linked up projects. Can you update this for us? (Or am I doing something wrong?) Thanks!
Linda F.
Linda, Check out Ilikeorange– she listed it there with her fab lead-in!
Thanks for gathering together the helpful tutes! I’m really looking forward to this one. I just hope I can make it with my own time crunch ( packing to move). Gonna try my best….
Lindsey, Do mini items of the zakka sew along count? like mini quilts? sheesh, had I known that was a possibility I may have made a mini! 🙂 I had never made a quilt before so this was a first for me, I was very excited with my results. Fantastic fun! can’t wait for the following weeks!
I think it needs to be clear what is or isn’t allowed. This week there are mini quilts and also an unfinished quilt top in the entries. I think it’s only fair if everyone puts in the same amount of work and makes the project from the book. I don’t want to sound grumpy, this is such a fun sewalong and I’ve enjoyed every week so far.
I agree Sarah, its not very fair. At this point in time I think 3 ladies have made minis, I understand how spendy linen is, but those of us that DID make the quilt from the book had put in a lot MORE time and effort than the gals with the minis its really unjust (took me 4 days only because ive never made a quilt before). I too am not trying to sound grumpy but, where is the fairness in that? if that was the case, my entry for week 1 should not have been pulled out of the pot ya know? I hadn’t finished it-at that time I didn’t know there was a group to upload photos= I would have just shared it that way but, I linked it up-unknowingly. But, I finished my quilt FULL size and its only fair to make what is expected for the week, don’t “cheat” others out of the chance to win also. Sorry, I know I sound really winey.. but its not fair.
