Back in December I was cleaning out my sewing room and came across a drawer full of empty spools. I thought they might be cute as garland to decorate for the Holidays and later in my sewing room.
There’s no telling how long I’ve had these. I’m a pack-rat I just can’t throw anything away that might one day be useful! (Please tell me I’m not alone in that thinking??)
If you do have some empty spools laying around and want to give it a try, I thought I’d show you how I made mine.
You’ll need:
- empty spools in any size (I used 15 in mine.)
- scrap fabric
- hot glue gun
- scissors
- ribbon or twine to string them
(1) Go ahead and remove the labels from the top and bottom of your spools.
(2) Take a scrap piece of fabric that is as wide as the spool is tall. Lay your spool on top and snip into (or mark) the fabric right at the edge of the center part of the spool.
(3) Trim the strip down to size. I just free handed with my scissors because I’m all about quick gratification! For a really straight line, you could use a rotary cutter.
(4) Dab on a little hot glue.
(5) And then press your strip onto the spool.
(6) Wrap the fabric around until you meet the beginning and trim so you overlap your starting point. Dab a little more glue and secure.
(7) Keep going until you have a little stash of cutesy spools! (I think they’d be adorable just like this in a glass jar!)
(8) Now we can string them up. Take a piece of ribbon or twine and make a knot at the beginning. String one and then knot after to keep it in place. Continue until you have them all strung and finish the end with a knot.
All finished, go hang it up!!
They would look cute as decoration for a sewing themed party, decoration for a craft booth or just for you to love in your home!

I used to thread several empty spools onto ribbon tied into a loop, for my babies to play with, like a rattle. They loved shaking them & teething on them. I don’t know why, but I’ve continued to save my empty spools, so I’m delighted to find this idea of covering them in fabric. Now it’s my turn to play with them!
